The Malibu Invitational Presented by Haute Route.
Hosted by the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village, the Malibu Invitational is a smaller, more personal cycling experience focused on camaraderie, challenging rides in a stunning destination, and the service and support you trust from Haute Route.
Guests of this three-day experience will ride full Haute Route distances through the Santa Monica Mountains with pro-level support, and includes the Malibu GRANFONDO on Saturday. Riders will experience the same customer care, support, and quality of a race-focused Haute Route event, but instead of the production of the finish line, this event focuses on camaraderie and extra amenities such as longer massages and a private group dinner.
Riders will self-select into the A group or the B group. We will have ride leaders attached to each group to help everyone ride and work together. Dedicated follow cars will provide service on the road and set up rest stops for refueling, as well as carry all your gear. On Friday, sections of the route will be marked as competitive timed sections. On Saturday, we will use your chip times from the Malibu GRANFONDO timed segments. And on Sunday, the whole hill climb will be a timed section. All three days will be professionally timed, and we will award prizes to riders with top times for the day.

STAGE 1 - Friday, March 15
119 kilometers with 2,173 meters of elevation gain
Stage 1 Original route includes scenic sections along Mulholland Highway, as we make our way through the mountains and down to the Pacific Coast. We’ll start by rolling through King Gillette Ranch and south along Mulholland Highway to Topanga Road, where after a short climb, we’ll enjoy a long steady decent to Pacific Coast Highway and Topanga State Beach. From here we will head north on Pacific Coast Highway through the heart of Malibu, heading back inland and up over the mountains via Malibu Canyon. After stopping at King Gillette Ranch to refuel, the Original route heads back out Mulholland to climb Stunt Road. This climb offers panoramic views at the top, including Angeles Crest, the San Gabriel Mountains, Pacific Coast, and Santa Monica Bay. The fun and twisting descent down Piuma provides a preview of the Stage 3 hill climb time trial. But save a little something for the short, stiff climb out of Montenido back to Mulholland before heading back to Westlake Village.
Enjoy lunch when you return and a well-deserved massage as part of the Haute Route experience. Let our mechanics wash and tune your bike if you choose. Late afternoon/early evening we will have a quick briefing to acknowledge top riders in our timed section challenge and talk about details of Saturday’s ride. Dinner is on your own—enjoy the evening with new and old friends, and check out the great dining options in Westlake Village.
For those who prefer a little less climbing, our Compact route option omits the climb up Stunt Road and descent down Piuma for a total of 85 Kilometers with 1,322 meters of elevation gain. You can view the route HERE.
STAGE 2 - Saturday, March 16
151 kilometers with 1,768 meters of elevation gain
Saturday we will join the peloton for the Malibu GRANFONDO. This incredible event features a scenic ride through the farmland around Somis, a long coastal ride through Malibu on the Pacific Coast Highway, and then the tough climb up Latigo Canyon! Course features four fully stocked, gourmet rest stops at 29km, 60km, 98km, and 130km, with the 10 Speed Coffee Truck at the start line to pre-fuel your big ride. For more information on rest stops and timing segments please see our FAQs page.
When you reach the finish line, hand your bike to one of our mechanics to be washed and tuned, have a nice lunch, and enjoy hard-earned massage from our professional soigneurs. Socialize and get some rest in the afternoon before we host everyone to an evening reception where we will acknowledge top riders in our timed section challenge and talk about details of Sunday’s ride.
For those who prefer a little less distance, our Compact route option omits the loop out through the farmlands for a total of 66 miles / 106 Kilometers with 4,507 feet / 1,300 meters of elevation gain. You can view the route HERE.
STAGE 3 - Sunday, March 17
67 kilometers with 1,374 meters of elevation gain
To cap off a great weekend, Stage 3 Original route is a 66.8 kilometer ride that includes a 7 kilometer Piuma Hill Climb Time Trial segment. From Westlake Village we will roll out as a group along Mulholland Highway and through King Gillette Ranch, as we did on Stage 1. The Piuma hill climb starts as steady climb with short moments of respite until you crest the summit on Piuma Road. Timing stops here to allow for safe recovery down a short descent, particularly due to the sharp left turn onto Scheuren Road. Climbing begins again on Scheuren Road, and ends at the top of Stunt Road. Following the descent we’ll roll back north on Mulholland Highway back to Westlake Village.
Riders can grab a shower in their room and pack up before we host a final brunch reception to celebrate the conclusion of the Malibu Invitational by Haute Route! Enjoy a beverage, trade stories, relive the amazing rides, and decide with your friends what Haute Route event you will join us for next year!
If a recovery ride is preferred instead of more climbing, riders can opt for a 35 kilometer spin with only 375 meters of elevation gain. You can view the route HERE.
